San Estanislao Kostka

Saint Stanislaus Kostka, also known as Stanislaw Kostka, was born on October 28, 1550, in Rostkovo, Poland. He was born into a noble family and was the son of a senator. From a young age, Stanislaus showed great piety and a deep devotion to the Catholic faith. At the age of 14, Stanislaus and his brother Paul were sent to the Viennese Jesuit college to receive a Jesuit education. However, his time at the college was marred by his brother's mistreatment and harsh treatment towards him. Despite this, Stanislaus remained steadfast in his faith and found solace in prayer. During his stay at the home of a Lutheran, Stanislaus fell gravely ill. Unfortunately, he was not allowed to call for a priest to administer the Last Rites, as his host did not share his Catholic beliefs. In his desperate time of need, Stanislaus turned to his personal patron, Saint Barbara, and prayed for her intercession. To his amazement, Saint Barbara appeared to him in a vision, accompanied by two angels. She administered Holy Communion to him, and miraculously, he was cured of his illness. Our Lady also appeared to Stanislaus during his illness and advised him to become a Jesuit, despite his family's objections. Following her guidance, Stanislaus left his noble upbringing behind and entered the Jesuit college in Rome, Italy. He quickly became friends with Saint Peter Canisius, a Jesuit priest known for his work as a theologian and educator. Stanislaus became a Jesuit novice on October 28, 1567, and studied under the guidance of Saint Francis Borgia, the third Superior General of the Society of Jesus. He developed a deep spirituality and committed himself to a life of prayer, service, and obedience. On August 15, 1568, at the age of 17, Stanislaus passed away in Rome, Italy, from a high fever. His death occurred between 3 and 4 a.m. on the feast of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary. He was buried in the newly built Sant’Andrea al Quirinale church in Rome. Stanislaus Kostka was beatified by Pope Paul V on October 8, 1605, and was canonized as a saint by Pope Benedict XIII on December 31, 1726. He is honored as a patron against broken bones and for those in aspirants to the Oblates of Saint Joseph. He is also sought after as an intercessor for desperate, lost, or impossible causes and for assistance with receiving the last sacraments. Additionally, Stanislaus Kostka is remembered for his strong devotion to the Eucharist. He is often depicted in art holding the Christ Child and is associated with Holy Communion. His memorial feast days are celebrated on August 15, the feast of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary, and November 13 on some calendars. Furthermore, Saint Stanislaus Kostka holds a special place as a patron of the Metropolitan Seminary in Lublin, Poland, and is recognized as a beloved saint in Poland. His life serves as an inspiration for all who seek to live a life dedicated to God, regardless of obstacles or opposition.
