Biografía

Saint Teresa De Gesu Jornet Y Ibars, also known as Teresa of Jesus Ibars, was born on 9 January 1843 in Aytona, Lleida, Spain. She was raised on a farm and grew up with a deep devotion to the Catholic faith. After completing her education, Teresa became a teacher at Lérida. Teresa felt a strong calling to the religious life and sought to join a religious order. However, her application was refused. Undeterred, she turned to her spiritual director for guidance, who suggested that she establish a new congregation that would cater to the needs of the poor and elderly. Following this advice, Teresa founded the Little Sisters of the Poor on 27 January 1872 in Barbastra. The congregation, under Teresa's leadership, grew rapidly and expanded to 58 houses during her lifetime. The Little Sisters of the Poor provided care and support for the elderly, particularly those who were abandoned or rejected by society. Teresa's work was driven by her deep compassion and love for those in need. Throughout her life, Saint Teresa De Gesu Jornet Y Ibars exemplified the virtues of humility, selflessness, and service. She lived a life dedicated to the care of the elderly and the marginalized, serving as a beacon of hope and love in her community. On 26 August 1897, Saint Teresa De Gesu Jornet Y Ibars passed away in Liria, Valencia, Spain, due to natural causes. Her selfless dedication and contribution to the welfare of the elderly and rejected individuals left a lasting impact on those she served. Recognizing her holiness and the impact of her work, Saint Teresa De Gesu Jornet Y Ibars was venerated on 22 January 1957 by Pope Pius XII. She was later beatified on 25 April 1958, and finally canonized as a saint on 27 January 1974, both by Pope Paul VI. Saint Teresa De Gesu Jornet Y Ibars is honored as the patron saint of people rejected by religious orders. Her life and work continue to inspire others to show compassion and love to the marginalized and forgotten members of society. Her feast day is celebrated on 26 August each year, serving as a reminder of the immense value of caring for the elderly and those in need.
