Saint Guthlac of Croyland, also known as Guthlac of Crowland, Guthlacus, and Guthlake, was born in 673 in Mercia, England. He came from a noble family, being the son of Penwald and the brother of Saint Pega of Peakirk. In his early years, Guthlac served as a soldier for nine years in the army of King Ethelred of Mercia.
