The road that cuts through the fertile lands of Brabant, now part of modern Belgium, bears witness to a sacrifice that transcends the silence of the centuries. It was here, near the ancient settlement of Tongeren, that a bishop of the Rhineland laid down his life for the faith. Saint Everigisil, a shepherd of the Church in Cologne, became a martyr during a journey that was meant to lead him to Poitiers. His story is one of movement and stillness, of ambition and ultimate surrender, preserved in the fragmented records of early ecclesiastical history.

As the Bishop of Cologne, he held a position of significant spiritual authority within the developing Christian communities of Gaul.
