Saint Mercurius

Saint Mercurius, born around 225 AD in Eskentos, Cappadocia (Eastern Asia Minor), was a Roman soldier of Scythian descent who became a Christian saint and martyr. His parents were converts to Christianity and named him 'Philopateer' or 'Lover of the Father.' Raised in a Christian manner, Mercurius enlisted in the Roman army during the reign of Emperor Decius at the age of 17. He gained a reputation as an outstanding swordsman and tactician through his military service. According to Christian tradition, he was the soldier who killed Julian the Apostate during his campaign in Persia. Later known by his Arabic name Abu-Sayfain or 'wielder of two swords,' Mercurius is venerated for his faithfulness and martyrdom.
