Biography

Consecrated to God as a small child at the abbey of Hirschau, Germany, Saint Erminold was educated by and professed as a Benedictine monk at the abbey. He was appointed abbot in Lorsch, Germany in 1110, but fearing his appointment had been bought, he resigned and returned to Hirschau. He became the first prior of Prüfening Abbey near Regensburg, Germany in 1114 and its abbot in 1117. He was killed by a lay-brother of the community who felt Erminold was excessively strict. He is sometimes mistakenly described as a martyr.
