Biography

Saint Eugene of Carthage, also known as Eugenius, was a renowned bishop of Carthage, North Africa in the 5th century. Born in an era of intense theological disputes, he firmly upheld orthodox Catholic teachings amidst the challenges posed by the Arian heresy. Eugene's leadership as the bishop of Carthage began in 481, when he assumed his position in this important Christian city. However, his tenure was marked by great adversity. In 484, the Arian Vandals, who adhered to a heretical interpretation of Christianity, seized Carthage. As a result, Eugene and many of his faithful parishioners were exiled to the harsh desert of Tripoli. What made this persecution particularly tragic was that numerous innocent children were part of this exile, forced to endure the hardships imposed upon them by the Vandal rulers. For several years, Eugene and his people suffered in exile, far from their homes and places of worship. In 488, the Vandals allowed Eugene and his parishioners to return to Carthage. However, their freedom was short-lived. In 496, Eugene was once again exiled, possibly due to his uncompromising defense of Catholic orthodoxy. Publicly proclaiming his faith in the face of persecution often brought grave consequences. Despite the challenges he faced, Eugene persevered in his devotion to God and his flock. He eventually settled in Albi, Italy, continuing his ministry and witnessing to the faith even in a foreign land. Here, he brought solace to the Christian community in Albi and shared his wisdom and teachings with anyone willing to listen. Saint Eugene's life was not without suffering. The mistreatment and hardships endured during his exiles ultimately took a toll on him. He passed away in Albi in the year 505, a testament to his unyielding commitment to the Catholic faith. Though he lived during a time before formal canonization processes were established, Saint Eugene of Carthage is venerated as a saint by tradition and popular acclaim. His canonization is considered to have occurred before the Congregation for the Causes of Saints, under the category of pre-congregation saints. Today, Saint Eugene is remembered and celebrated on his feast day, which falls on the 13th of July.
