Saint Ezekiel Moreno Y Diaz

Saint Ezekiel Moreno y Diaz, also known as Ezequiel Moreno y Díaz, was born on 9 April 1848 in Alfaro, Tarazona, Spain. He hailed from a pious family in a town known for its devout Catholicism. Growing up in this religious atmosphere, Ezekiel developed a strong faith and desire to serve God. In pursuit of his calling, Ezekiel joined the Augustinian Recollects on 21 September 1864 at Montegudo, Navarra, Spain. He dedicated himself to a life of prayer, study, and service within the religious order. Through his unwavering commitment and exemplary holiness, Ezekiel was appointed Prior of his monastery. On 3 June 1871, Ezekiel received ordination as a priest in Manila, Philippines. It was in the Philippines that he embarked on an extraordinary missionary journey. Saint Ezekiel Moreno became well-known for his deep love for the people and his dedication to preaching the Gospel. Throughout his ministry, he demonstrated a profound compassion for those he served, especially the poor and marginalized. Ezekiel's ministry extended beyond the Philippines as he was appointed Vicar apostolic of Casanare and later became the bishop of Pinara, Colombia on 23 October 1893. Shortly after, on 2 December 1893, he was appointed Bishop of Pasto, Colombia. During his tenure as bishop, Ezekiel's outstanding characteristic was his boundless charity towards the faithful of his diocese. He tirelessly worked to improve the well-being of his flock, offering them spiritual guidance and material support. Saint Ezekiel Moreno is remembered for his profound devotion to relieving the sufferings of others. His generous acts of charity, even in the face of personal discomfort and limitations, garnered him a reputation as a loving and selfless servant of God. It is said that numerous miracles were attributed to his intercession, particularly in the realm of curing cancer patients. His unshakable faith and unwavering dedication to the Lord inspired many. On 19 August 1906, Saint Ezekiel Moreno passed away at Montegudo, Navarra, Spain, due to cancer of the palate. Despite his illness, he continued to minister and offer consolation to those around him until his very last moment. His death marked a deep loss for the faithful who had benefitted from his spiritual guidance and remarkable acts of charity. Recognizing his exemplary virtues and the numerous miracles associated with his intercession, Pope Paul VI declared Ezekiel Moreno venerable on 1 February 1975. Subsequently, on 1 November 1975, Pope Paul VI beatified him, acknowledging his holy life and the significant impact he had made on the lives of countless people. Finally, Saint Ezekiel Moreno was canonized on 11 October 1992 by Pope John Paul II at Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic. Saint Ezekiel Moreno y Diaz is honored as the patron saint against cancer.
