Biography

Saint Hermes of Adrianople, also known as Ermete, was a prominent figure in the early Christian Church during the persecutions of Diocletian. He is best known for his unwavering faith and courage in the face of adversity. Not much is known about Saint Hermes' early life, but it is believed that he was born in Adrianople, Thrace. He later became the Bishop of Heraclea, a significant position within the Church hierarchy. During the reign of Diocletian, a fierce persecution against Christians began. Governor Basso, a zealous supporter of Diocletian's anti-Christian policies, ordered Saint Hermes and Saint Philip, a fellow bishop, to close their church and surrender all sacred scriptures, documents, and altar furnishings. However, when Saint Hermes was asked to comply, he explained that he lacked the authority to perform such actions. This refusal angered Governor Basso, who saw it as an act of defiance against the Roman Empire. Consequently, Saint Hermes and Saint Philip were imprisoned and subjected to severe torture. They endured brutal floggings, designed to break their spirits and coerce their compliance. Despite the physical pain they endured, both saints remained steadfast in their faith and refused to relent. The final act of persecution against Saint Hermes and Saint Philip was their execution. They were subjected to a gruesome death, burned to death in Adrianople. These martyrs willingly sacrificed their lives for their unwavering dedication to Christ and the Church.
