Saint Ivo of Kermartin

Biography

Saint Ivo of Kermartin, also known as Advocate of the Poor, Ivo Helory, and Ivo Herloi, was born on October 17, 1253, in Kermartin near Treguier, Brittany. He hailed from a wealthy Breton noble family and showed great promise from a young age. At the age of 14, Ivo began his studies in civil and canon law, philosophy, and theology in Paris and Orleans. During his academic years, Ivo became a Franciscan tertiary, embracing the ideals of the Franciscan order and dedicating his life to serving others. He pursued a career as a lawyer, practicing in both civil and ecclesiastical courts. Known for his exceptional legal skills, Saint Ivo often represented the poor and marginalized without any charge, advocating for their rights and defending them against injustice. While his accomplishments in the legal profession were notable, Saint Ivo's commitment to the well-being of those less fortunate went beyond his professional duties. He would visit prisoners awaiting trial, ministering to them and providing spiritual guidance and support. Saint Ivo exhibited great personal asceticism, engaging in frequent fasting and penance. He even wore a hair shirt under his clothing as a symbol of his deep devotion and self-discipline. Saint Ivo was unwavering in his defense of the Church and its rights, often engaging in legal battles with the state over taxes and other matters. As a diocesan judge, he remained incorruptible, refusing any bribes that came his way. He tirelessly worked to settle disputes out of court in order to save time and money for those involved. In 1284, Saint Ivo was ordained as a priest, recognizing the spiritual calling that resonated within him. Three years later, in 1287, he chose to resign from his legal position to fully dedicate himself to the pastoral care of his parishioners in Tredez and Lovannec. Beyond his role as a priest, Saint Ivo was renowned as a preacher and arbitrator, using his influence to resolve conflicts and promote peace. He demonstrated an extraordinary level of generosity, using his own funds to build a hospital and tending to the sick and poor within it. Additionally, he selflessly gave away the harvests from his lands to feed the hungry. There are numerous accounts of Saint Ivo's miraculous abilities. Perhaps the most well-known miracle attributed to him is the ability to feed hundreds of people from a single loaf of bread. This astounding act of kindness exemplifies his deep faith and compassionate nature. Saint Ivo of Kermartin passed away on May 19, 1303, at Louannec, Brittany. He died of natural causes following a sermon he delivered on Ascension Eve. Recognizing his exceptional holiness and the impact of his devoted life, Pope Clement VI canonized him in June 1347. Today, Saint Ivo is venerated as the patron saint of abandoned people, advocates, attorneys, bailiffs, barristers, Brittany, canon lawyers, canonists, judges, jurists, lawyers, notaries, orphans, and the Worshipful Company of Solicitors. His feast day is celebrated on May 19th, commemorating his selflessness and dedication to the cause of justice. Saint Ivo is often depicted in artwork as a lawyer holding a book, with an angel near his head and a lion at his feet. Other representations show him surrounded by suppliants, holding a parchment and pointing upwards. He is also symbolically shown surrounded by doves, representing the presence of the Holy Spirit. The life and legacy of Saint Ivo of Kermartin serve as an inspiration to all, encouraging us to stand up for justice, to defend the rights of the marginalized, and to care for the most vulnerable within our society.
