Biography
Saint Michael the Archangel is the leader of the heavenly host, named in Scripture in the book of Daniel, the letter of Jude, and the book of Revelation, where he casts the dragon out of heaven. His name, from the Hebrew, is itself a battle cry: Who is like God?
Venerated since the earliest centuries of the Church as protector of the people of God, he is invoked as defender in spiritual combat and patron of those whose work is protection: police officers, soldiers, and paramedics among them. With the archangels Gabriel and Raphael he is honored on 29 September, the feast long known as Michaelmas.
