Saint Paul the Simple, also known as Paolo il Semplice, was a prominent figure in early Christianity. Although not much is known about his early life, it is believed that he was a farmer by profession. Paul's life took a significant turn when he discovered his wife's adultery. Deeply affected by this betrayal, he decided to renounce his former life and pursue a more ascetic path. Inspired by the renowned Saint Anthony the Abbot, Paul became a desert hermit, withdrawing from society to devote himself entirely to his spirituality. Paul's simple and humble acceptance of the teachings he received from Saint Anthony earned him the title "The Simple." He embraced a minimalist lifestyle, stripped of material possessions and worldly temptations.
This austerity allowed him to focus on his spiritual growth and deepened his connection with God. During his time as a hermit, Paul experienced numerous visions, which further confirmed his devotion and guided him on his spiritual journey. These visions were seen as divine revelations and contributed to his reputation as a miracle worker. Many sought his guidance and intercession in times of difficulty and distress. Saint Paul the Simple lived during a time when the Catholic Church was still in its formative years. Therefore, the concept of canonization, as we understand it today, did not exist.
