Saint Theodoric's martyrdom occurred during the Battle of Ebsdorf on February 2, 880. This battle was part of the larger struggle between the Christian German Saxons and the invading Norse Vikings who aimed to conquer and convert the Saxons to their own pagan beliefs. Theodoric, known for his steadfast devotion to his faith and his flock, played a critical role in leading the Saxons in their defense against these invaders. During the battle, Saint Theodoric not only acted as their spiritual guide but also demonstrated exceptional bravery on the front lines, encouraging his fellow soldiers and providing them with strength and conviction. The Viking forces, however, proved to be relentless, determined to crush the Christian resistance.
