Saint Ferdinand III of Castille, also known as Ferdinand the Saint, was born in 1198 near Salamanca, Spain. He was the son of Alfonso IX, the King of Leon, and Berengaria, the daughter of King Alfonso III of Castile. Ferdinand was the cousin of Saint Louis IX and grew up in a devout Catholic family.
