Saint Gertrude the Great, also known as Gertrude of Helfta, was born on January 6, 1256, in Eisleben, Thuringia (part of modern Germany). Unfortunately, we do not know who her parents were or what became of them, leading to the belief that she may have been an orphan. At the tender age of five, she was entrusted to the care of the Benedictine abbey of Saint Mary of Helfta in Eisleben, where she was raised....
