Biography

Blessed Abundio Martín Rodríguez, also known as Martyred Abundio, was a priest and member of the Missionaries of the Sacred Heart. He was born on 14 April 1908 in Villaescusa, Palencia, Spain. Blessed Abundio dedicated his life to serving God and the people as a priest.

In the midst of the Spanish Civil War, a turbulent time in Spain's history, Blessed Abundio fearlessly remained committed to his faith and vocation. He was known for his unwavering dedication to the principles of Christianity and his strong desire to spread love, peace, and mercy to those around him.

Unfortunately, the hostile political climate of the time proved to be dangerous for religious leaders like Blessed Abundio. On 29 September 1936, he was martyred in Seriñá, Girona, Spain, by members of the Communist militia who machine-gunned him at a ruined house next to the Pont de Ser. His body was buried in a mass grave nearby.

Despite the tragic circumstances of his death, Blessed Abundio's legacy lived on as a symbol of faith and sacrifice. His relics were re-interred in a niche in the cemetery of Canet de Mar, Spain, on 30 March 1940.

It is important to note that the Catholic Church recognized the martyrdom of Blessed Abundio Martín Rodríguez. On 8 July 2016, Pope Francis issued a decree of martyrdom, acknowledging his unwavering faith and ultimate sacrifice. Subsequently, on 6 May 2017, Pope Francis beatified Blessed Abundio during a ceremony held in the Cathedral of Santa Maria in Girona, Spain. The beatification was presided over by Cardinal Angelo Amato, symbolizing the recognition and honor bestowed upon Blessed Abundio by the Church.
