Biography

Blessed Gundisalvus of Lagos, also known as Gonçalo, Gonçalo, Gonsalvo, Gonzalo, and Gundisalvo, was born around 1360 in Lagos, Algarve, southern Portugal. He was the son of a fisherman, and at the young age of 20, he joined the Augustinian friars.

Gundisalvus quickly gained a reputation as a theologian and preacher, dedicating his catechesis work to reaching out to children, the illiterate, and the uneducated. He had a special gift for reaching those who may not have had access to formal education. Furthermore, Gundisalvus was a gifted artist, known for illuminating and illustrating liturgical books.

Throughout his life, Gundisalvus held various positions of leadership within the Augustinian order. He served as the Prior of the convent of Saint Lawrence in Miragaia, Lourinhã, Portugal in 1394. Later, he became the Superior of the convent of Our Lady of Grace in Lisbon, Portugal in 1404. In 1408, he was appointed the Superior of the convent of Our Lady of Grace in Santarém, Portugal. Finally, in 1412, Gundisalvus became the Prior of the Convent of Our Lady of Grace in Torres Vedras, Portugal, where he remained until his death.

While serving in these various positions, Gundisalvus dedicated himself to teaching his brother friars and guiding them in their spiritual journey. He embodied humility, taking on all the menial tasks of the convent as an example of Christ's humble service.

As a representation, Blessed Gundisalvus of Lagos is often depicted as an Augustinian friar. He is seen holding up a crucifix and passionately preaching, capturing his dedication to spreading the Gospel and delivering powerful sermons. Another representation shows him blessing the sea or sailors, symbolizing his connection to the maritime region of Lagos and his intercession for those at sea.

Blessed Gundisalvus of Lagos is venerated by the Catholic Church, and his feast day is celebrated on October 15th. In the Diocese of Algarve and the Patriarchate of Lisbon, his feast day is also celebrated on October 27th, while the Augustinians commemorate him on October 21st. Some calendars may mark his feast day on October 14th.

Gundisalvus passed away on October 15, 1422, at the convent of Our Lady of Grace in Torres Vedras, in the diocese of Faro, Portugal. He died of natural causes, and his relics were interred in the church of the convent where he had served.

In recognition of his holiness and the impact of his life and teachings, Blessed Gundisalvus of Lagos was beatified on May 2, 1778, by Pope Pius VI. The cultus, or veneration, of Blessed Gundisalvus has been confirmed and supported by the Catholic Church.
