Biography

Blessed Manuel Formigo Giráldez, also known as Blessed Manuel, was an Augustinian priest who was martyred during the Spanish Civil War. Born on November 13, 1894, in Pazos Hermos, Orense, Spain, he dedicated his life to the service of God and the Church.

Not much is known about his early life and upbringing, but it is evident that Blessed Manuel had a strong calling to the priesthood. He entered the Augustinian Order, a religious community known for its commitment to contemplation and active ministry.

Blessed Manuel's life as a priest was characterized by his devotion to the Gospel and his tireless efforts to serve the needs of his parishioners. He was known for his compassion, humility, and unwavering faith. As an Augustinian, he followed the teachings of Saint Augustine, who emphasized the importance of love, unity, and the pursuit of truth.

However, the turbulent times of the Spanish Civil War would put Blessed Manuel's faith and dedication to the ultimate test. During this violent conflict that took place from 1936 to 1939, many clergy members, religious, and innocent civilians were targeted and persecuted for their faith.

On August 15, 1936, Blessed Manuel Formigo Giráldez was martyred in Oviedo, Asturias, Spain. He suffered martyrdom for his unwavering commitment to God and the Catholic Church, refusing to renounce his faith despite the dangers and threats he faced.

Recognizing his heroic virtues and the sacrifice he made for his faith, Pope Benedict XVI declared Blessed Manuel Formigo Giráldez as venerable on June 1, 2007. Later, on October 28, 2007, Pope Benedict XVI beatified him, recognizing him as a blessed martyr of the Catholic Church.

While Blessed Manuel Formigo Giráldez may not be widely known or represented in popular devotion, his life and witness stand as a testament to the enduring power of faith and the courage of those who remained faithful even in the face of persecution.

On his feast day, observed on August 15, the Catholic faithful are invited to remember and honor the life, ministry, and martyrdom of Blessed Manuel Formigo Giráldez. In doing so, they can draw inspiration from his example and continue to strive for holiness in their own lives.
