Feast Day: November 6
Death: November 1, 6
Blessed Thomas Ochia Jihyoe, also known as Thomas Jihyoe di Sant’Agostino, Thomas of Saint Augustine, or Kintsuba, was born around 1602 in Omura, Nagasaki, Japan, to a devout Christian family. Both of his parents served as catechists and tragically died as martyrs for their faith. Thomas, growing up in this Christian environment, was deeply influenced by their commitment and devotion.
Thomas received his education at a Jesuit school in Arima, Japan. It was during this time that he experienced a calling to religious life. Seeking further education and training, he journeyed to Macao and continued his studies there. In 1622, he traveled to Manila, Philippines, to pursue his studies and it was there that he decided to join the Order of Saint Augustine. In 1624, he made his religious profession as an Augustinian.
After completing his studies in Manila, Father Thomas returned to Japan in 1631. He embarked on a mission to minister to the Christian community during a period of intense persecution and opposition by the imperial government. Despite the danger involved, he dedicated himself to providing spiritual guidance and support to imprisoned Christians, including numerous missionaries.
Initially, the authorities were unaware of Father Thomas' priestly vocation, allowing him access to the imprisoned Christians. However, once they discovered his activities, he was forced to flee and went into hiding. For a period of time, he sought refuge in a cave while evading an intense manhunt. During this time, he employed various disguises and tricks to continue his ministry clandestinely. To protect his true identity, he adopted the alias of Kintsuba.
Over the years, Father Thomas used his resourcefulness and dedication to serve the Christian community discreetly. He ministered to the spiritual needs of the faithful, providing them with sacraments and guidance under the constant threat of persecution. However, his efforts were eventually discovered, and he was captured by the authorities.
Following his capture, Father Thomas faced relentless torture and repeated demands to renounce his Christian faith. However, he remained steadfast and resolute, refusing to abandon his beliefs. Despite the immense suffering inflicted upon him, he courageously stood firm in his commitment to Christ and the Church.
On November 6, 1637, Father Thomas Ochia Jihyoe was executed by hanging him upside down on the Hill of Martyrs, Nishizaka, Nagasaki, Japan. His death was the culmination of his unwavering devotion and martyrdom endured for the sake of the faith.
Blessed Thomas Ochia Jihyoe, for his extraordinary witness, unwavering faith, and sacrificial service to the Christian community, is celebrated as a martyr and a beacon of inspiration. His selfless dedication and refusal to renounce his beliefs continue to inspire and remind us of the true essence of martyrdom and the ultimate reward of eternal life. Blessed Thomas was beatified by Pope Benedict XVI on November 24, 2008, and is venerated as one of the Augustinian Martyrs of Japan.
