Biografía

Blessed Álvaro Ibáñez Lázaro, also known as Brother Florencio Martín, was born on 12 June 1913 in Godos, Teruel, Spain. At the age of just one day, he was baptized and received into the Catholic faith. He grew up in a devout family, surrounded by strong religious values.

In 1927, at the age of 14, Álvaro joined the Brothers of the Christian Schools, a religious order founded by Saint John Baptist de La Salle, in Cambrils, Spain. On 10 November 1927, he officially became a member of the order and took the habit on 14 August 1929. From then on, he was known as Brother Florencio Martín.

Brother Florencio began his teaching journey in Barceloneta, Spain, in February 1932. He quickly gained popularity among his students and colleagues for his exceptional skills in art and singing. He had a unique ability to engage his students and make learning an enjoyable experience. His dedication to his vocation and his gentle, compassionate demeanor endeared him to all who knew him.

Tragically, during the tumultuous period of the Spanish Civil War, Brother Florencio Martín was martyred for his unwavering faith. On 22 October 1936, he was martyred in Benimaclet, Valencia, Spain, as a result of the persecution faced by Catholics at that time. His courage in the face of adversity and his steadfastness in his beliefs inspire many to this day.

Recognizing his heroic virtues and the sacrifice of his life for the faith, Pope John Paul II declared him as a martyr on 20 December 1999. This decree of martyrdom acknowledged Brother Florencio's exemplary devotion and the ultimate price he paid for his commitment to Christ.

Subsequently, on 11 March 2001, Pope John Paul II beatified Blessed Álvaro Ibáñez Lázaro, giving him the title of "Blessed." This beatification serves as a testament to his holiness and his status as a role model for all those striving to live a life in accordance with Catholic values.

Blessed Álvaro Ibáñez Lázaro, or Brother Florencio Martín, is remembered and celebrated on 22 October each year, his designated feast day. As we honor his memory, we are reminded of his teachings and example, always urging us to remain steadfast in our faith, even in the face of adversity.
