Biografía

Blessed Ángel Ramos Velázquez, born on 9 March 1876 in Seville, Spain, was a remarkable individual who left a lasting impact through his deep faith, artistic talents, and profound dedication to spreading Christianity. As a young teenager, Ángel embarked on a pilgrimage to Rome, Italy, at the tender age of 15. Following this transformative journey, he decided to join the Salesians of Don Bosco, a religious order centered on education and youth ministry.

Ángel found solace and purpose in the Salesians' house at Sarria, situated outside Barcelona, Spain. It was there that he officially professed his commitment to the order in the year 1900. Recognizing his artistic talents, Ángel utilized painting and theatre as mediums for evangelization, skillfully employing his creative gifts to communicate the message of faith.

Tragically, during the turbulent period of the Spanish Civil War, Ángel fell victim to the violent persecution suffered by many Christians. He was captured by anti-Christian militia-men while seeking refuge in an inn where he had been hiding. Refusing to renounce his beliefs, Ángel courageously faced martyrdom, exemplifying unwavering devotion to God and the Church. His life was ultimately sacrificed for his steadfast commitment to his faith.

Blessed Ángel Ramos Velázquez is commemorated on 11 October each year and is also recognized as one of the Martyred Salesians of Valencia, Catalunya, and Aragón, with a separate feast day on 22 September. His beatification process was initiated, and the recognition of his martyrdom was officially declared by Pope John Paul II on 20 December 1999. On 11 March 2001, Pope John Paul II further honored Ángel by beatifying him, acknowledging his exceptional example of sanctity and sacrifice.

Through the life of Blessed Ángel Ramos Velázquez, we are inspired to embrace our faith wholeheartedly and turn our talents and passions into instruments for the greater glory of God. His legacy as an artist and martyr continues to inspire Catholics worldwide, reminding us of the profound impact that one individual can make in the face of adversity.
