Beato Adelelmo de Engelberg

Blessed Adelelmo of Engelberg, also known as Adelelmus or Adelhelm, was a Benedictine monk who played a significant role in the establishment and development of the abbey of Engelberg nell’Unterwalden in Switzerland. Unfortunately, exact details of his birth and early life are not available.

Adelelmo began his religious journey as a monk at the esteemed Saint Blaise of Hirsau monastery, located in the Black Forest. It was during his time there that he displayed exceptional dedication and leadership, earning the respect of his fellow monks. Eventually, he was chosen to lead a group of monks to establish a new abbey in Engelberg nell’Unterwalden.

Under Adelelmo's guidance, the abbey of Engelberg flourished, becoming a center of spiritual growth and scholarly pursuits. He served as its first prior and abbot, providing guidance and direction to the growing community of monks. His deep knowledge and spiritual wisdom made him a respected figure, not only within the abbey but also beyond its walls.

One of the notable individuals influenced by Adelelmo was Blessed Conrad of Sellenburen, the founder of the abbey. Adelelmo served as Conrad's spiritual teacher, helping shape his spiritual growth and providing him with the necessary guidance to establish Engelberg as a place of profound reverence and devotion.

Despite the limited information available, it is evident that Blessed Adelelmo of Engelberg was a highly regarded figure in the early history of the abbey. Blessed Adelelmo passed away on 25th February 1131 at the abbey of Engelberg nell’Unterwalden. He died of natural causes and was buried at the abbey. In 1611, his relics were enshrined, symbolizing the veneration and reverence bestowed upon him by the faithful.
