Early life
Alberto Marvelli was born in Ferrara on 21 March 1918, the second of six children, in a Christian family in which piety went together with charitable, catechetical and social activity.[1] He attended the Salesian oratory and Azione Cattolica, where he summed up his programme in one word: 'saint'.[1] He loved every sport, tennis, volleyball, athletics, football, swimming and mountain excursions, and above all the bicycle, which also served his apostolate and his charitable work.[1] At university he continued his formation in the FUCI, taking Piergiorgio Frassati as his model, and after graduating in mechanical engineering on 30 June 1941 he had to leave for military service.[1]
War years
He condemned the war; discharged because three of his brothers were at the front, he worked for a short period at FIAT in Turin.[1] After 25 July 1943, the fall of fascism, and 8 September 1943, the German occupation, he returned home to Rimini, and after every bombardment he was the first to run to help the wounded, assist the dying and dig out those buried alive.[1] He distributed to the poor whatever he could gather, mattresses, blankets, pots and food, going by bicycle to where he knew there was hunger and illness, and at times came home without shoes or without the bicycle.[1] During the German occupation he saved many young people from deportation, opening sealed wagons about to leave the station of Santarcangelo and freeing men and women destined for the concentration camps.[1]
Public service and death
After the liberation of the city, on 23 September 1945, the first council of the Comitato di Liberazione was formed, with him among its assessors; he belonged to no party and had not been a partisan.[1] At 26 he was given the housing commission, which assigned lodgings in the city, settled disputes and requisitioned apartments, and then the task of reconstruction as a collaborator of the local section of the Genio Civile.[1] When the parties were reborn in Rimini he joined the Democrazia Cristiana, and in 1945 the bishop called him to lead the Laureati Cattolici.[1] He started a people's university, opened a canteen for the poor, was among the founders of the ACLI, and set up a cooperative of building workers, the first 'white' cooperative in 'red' Romagna.[1] On the evening of 5 October 1946, going by bicycle to hold an election rally as a candidate for the first municipal administration, he was struck by a military truck at 8.30 p.m. and died a few hours later, at 28, without regaining consciousness.[1] He was beatified on 5 September 2004 by Pope John Paul II.[1]
