Beato Andrés Francisco Simón Gómez

Blessed Andrés Francisco Simón Gómez, also known as Eloy of Orihuela, was a Franciscan Capuchin priest and martyr of the Spanish Civil War. He was born on November 30, 1876, in Orihuela, Alicante, Spain.

From a young age, Andrés showed a deep devotion to the Catholic faith and a strong desire to serve God. He joined the Order of Friars Minor Capuchin and was ordained a priest in his early twenties. Known for his piety, humility, and dedication to the poor, Andrés became a beloved figure in his community.

However, during the turbulent years of the Spanish Civil War, religious persecution became rampant. The anti-Catholic sentiments and violence of the time did not deter Andrés from his priestly duties. Despite the risks, he continued to celebrate Mass, provide spiritual guidance, and offer solace to those in need.

Tragically, on November 7, 1936, Andrés was martyred for his unwavering faith. He was executed in Crevillente, Alicante, Spain, for refusing to renounce his Catholic beliefs and for refusing to abandon his priestly duties.

The life and martyrdom of Andrés Francisco Simón Gómez were recognized and venerated by the Catholic Church. On March 27, 2013, Pope Francis decreed his martyrdom, acknowledging his ultimate sacrifice for the faith. Andrés was later beatified on October 13, 2013, by the same Pope.

Today, Blessed Andrés Francisco Simón Gómez is remembered as a courageous and devout priest who remained steadfast in his commitment to God and to serving others, even in the face of grave danger. His life serves as an inspiration and a reminder of the enduring power of faith and devotion.
