Biografía

Blessed Antonio Caba Pozo was born on 1 December 1914 in Lanjarón, Granada, Spain. From an early age, he felt a profound call to the religious life and began his studies at the San Cecilio Seminary in the archdiocese of Granada when he was just 13 years old.

Antonio's spiritual journey led him to discern a desire to join the Jesuits, however, he faced a significant obstacle. In order to pursue his studies with the Jesuits, he would have had to relocate to Belgium. Yet, yielding to the pressures of his family, who wished him to stay in Spain, Antonio reluctantly abandoned his plans to join the Jesuits.

Despite this setback, Antonio remained steadfast in his commitment to his faith and remained at the San Cecilio Seminary. He dedicated himself to his studies, deepening his understanding of theology and preparing for a life of service to the Church.

Tragically, Antonio's life was cut short due to the turmoil of the Spanish Civil War. He, along with countless others, became a victim of the religious persecution that was prevalent during that time. On 21 July 1936, Antonio was shot in Lanjarón, Granada, Spain, faithfully bearing witness to his faith till the very end.

Recognizing his heroic witness, Pope Francis declared Antonio Caba Pozo a martyr on 28 November 2019, acknowledging the sacrifice he made for his faith. Then, on 26 February 2022, Pope Francis beatified him, elevating him to the rank of Blessed. The beatification ceremony took place at the Cathedral of La Encarnación del Señor in Granada, Spain, honoring Antonio's exemplary life of faith and martyrdom.

Blessed Antonio Caba Pozo serves as an inspiration to all Catholics, embodying the virtues of courage, dedication, and fidelity to one's religious convictions. His life and martyrdom stand as a testament to the strength of conviction and the ultimate sacrifice made in the name of faith. As a powerful example of faithfulness in the face of adversity, Blessed Antonio Caba Pozo's memory continues to inspire and encourage all those who encounter his story.
