Biografía

Blessed Antonio Frutos Tena Amaya, born on June 25, 1905, in Benquerencia, Badajoz, Spain, was a dedicated priest of the diocese of Córdoba. He served the community of Peraleda del Zaucejo with great devotion during a challenging period in Spanish history, the Spanish Civil War.

Growing up in a deeply religious family, Antonio developed a strong faith from an early age. This faith would guide him throughout his life and eventually lead him to the priesthood. After completing his seminary studies, Antonio was ordained a priest and began his ministry in the diocese of Córdoba, where he was known for his compassion, humility, and zeal for the salvation of souls.

The outbreak of the Spanish Civil War in 1936 plunged the country into a period of widespread political and social unrest. As tensions escalated, religious persecution became rampant, and many priests were being targeted. Despite the dangers, Blessed Antonio chose to remain with his parishioners, providing spiritual guidance and support during the turbulent times.

Tragically, on September 6, 1936, in Malpartida, Badajoz, Blessed Antonio Frutos Tena Amaya was martyred for his unwavering faith and commitment to his priestly duties. He bravely met his death, remaining steadfast in his devotion to God and the Church. His sacrificial witness serves as an inspiration to all who strive to live their faith courageously.

In recognition of his martyrdom and exemplary life, Pope Francis, on November 23, 2020, declared Blessed Antonio Frutos Tena Amaya to be venerated, acknowledging his sanctity and heroic virtues. Then, on October 16, 2021, Pope Francis beatified him, elevating him to the rank of Blessed. The beatification recognition took place at the Cathedral of Nuestra Señora de la Asunción in Córdoba, Spain, in a ceremony presided over by Cardinal Marcello Semeraro.

Blessed Antonio Frutos Tena Amaya's feast day is celebrated on September 6th. As a newly beatified martyr of the Spanish Civil War, he serves as a powerful intercessor and an example of faith, courage, and selflessness for Catholics around the world. His life continues to inspire us to persevere in our own faith journeys, even in the face of adversity. May we seek his intercession and strive to imitate his unyielding commitment to Christ and his Church.
