Biografía

Blessed Antonio González Alonso, born on April 11, 1912, in the parish of Saint James in Nembra, Asturias, Spain, was the son of Severino González. Antonio initially aspired to join the Dominicans, inspired by his brother's vocation. However, his dreams were thwarted when he contracted tuberculosis and had to return home.

Back in his hometown, Antonio immersed himself in Eucharistic adoration and dedicated himself to the study of teaching. His active involvement in the faith led to his imprisonment, along with his father and one of his brothers, at the onset of the Spanish Civil War.

During his captivity, Antonio was subjected to immense pressure to renounce his faith. At one point, he was presented with an opportunity to gain his freedom if he agreed to destroy the altar in his former parish church. However, unwavering in his devotion to God, he firmly refused this compromise.

Despite the trials and hardships he faced, Antonio's steadfast faith only grew stronger. On September 11, 1936, near Los Areneros in Oviedo, Asturias, he was brutally mutilated, beaten, and thrown into a well to drown. Tragically, his body was never recovered.

Antonio González Alonso was recognized as a martyr for his unwavering commitment to his beliefs and refusal to compromise his faith in the face of persecution. His martyrdom was officially acknowledged by Pope Francis on January 21, 2016, and he was beatified on October 8, 2016, in a ceremony held at the Cathedral of San Salvador in Oviedo, Spain. The beatification recognition was presided over by Cardinal Angelo Amato.

Blessed Antonio González Alonso's feast days are celebrated on September 11 and, in some calendars, on October 21. He serves as an inspiration to all believers, a testament to the indomitable spirit of those who remain true to their faith, even in the most challenging circumstances.
