Biografía

Blessed Antonio Montilla Cañete, also known as Blessed Antonio Montilla, was a seminarian of the diocese of Córdoba, Spain, who was martyred during the Spanish Civil War. He was born on 6 August 1912, in Puente Genil, Córdoba, Spain.

Antonio Montilla Cañete grew up in a devout Catholic family and felt called to the priesthood from a young age. Known for his piety, humility, and dedication to his studies, he entered the seminary of the diocese of Córdoba to pursue his vocation.

During the turbulent years of the Spanish Civil War, when religious persecution was rampant, Antonio Montilla Cañete remained steadfast in his faith and commitment to serve the Church. As the conflict intensified, the seminary was closed, and Antonio, together with his fellow seminarians, faced imminent danger.

On 24 July 1936, in his hometown of Puente Genil, Córdoba, Antonio Montilla Cañete was arrested by anti-Catholic forces. He was subjected to harsh interrogation and pressured to renounce his faith, yet he refused to abandon his beliefs. Despite the threats and persecution he endured, Antonio remained resolute and steadfast in his commitment to Christ.

Finally, a day that was meant to celebrate his 24th birthday, 24 July 1936, became the day of Antonio Montilla Cañete's martyrdom. He was executed for his unwavering allegiance to the Catholic Church and his refusal to renounce his faith. His courageous witness in the face of persecution serves as a powerful testament to his deep love for God and his unabashed devotion to the Christian faith.

Blessed Antonio Montilla Cañete's martyrdom did not go unnoticed by the Church. On 23 November 2020, Pope Francis declared him venerable, recognizing his heroic virtues. A year later, on 16 October 2021, Pope Francis beatified him at a solemn ceremony held at the Cathedral of Nuestra Señora de la Asunción in Córdoba, Spain. The beatification recognition was presided over by Cardinal Marcello Semeraro, who praised Blessed Antonio Montilla Cañete as an example of faithfulness and courage.

Today, Blessed Antonio Montilla Cañete is revered as a patron of seminarians and a model of fidelity to the Catholic faith. His life and martyrdom are an inspiration to all believers, reminding us of the importance of standing firm in our convictions, even in the face of adversity. We continue to pray for his intercession and seek his guidance as we strive to live out our faith with courage and unwavering commitment, just as he did.
