Biografía

Blessed Antonio Sierra Leyva was born on November 22, 1876, in the town of Churriana de la Vega, located in the province of Granada, Spain. He was a devout Catholic and felt a deep calling to serve God and His people from an early age.

After discerning his vocation, Antonio joined the religious congregation known as the Servants of the Divine Child Mary. He dedicated his life to the priesthood and became ordained as a priest within this order. He wholeheartedly embraced his mission to bring Christ's love and teachings to others.

During the tumultuous years of the Spanish Civil War, which lasted from 1936 to 1939, the Catholic Church faced severe persecution due to its opposition to the anti-Catholic forces in power. Sadly, Father Antonio Sierra Leyva found himself targeted for his faith.

On September 15, 1936, Father Antonio was martyred in the village of Venta Pavón, Alic√∫n, in the province of Almeria, Spain. He courageously stood firm in his faith, refusing to renounce his beliefs despite the threats to his life. It is a testament to his unwavering devotion that he chose to lay down his life rather than abandon his dedication to Christ and the Church.

The heroic witness of Father Antonio did not go unrecognized. On June 14, 2016, Pope Francis issued a decree recognizing his martyrdom, which allowed for his veneration within the Catholic Church. Following this decree, on March 25, 2017, Pope Francis himself presided over the beatification ceremony of Blessed Antonio Sierra Leyva. The momentous event took place in the Palacio de Exposiciones y Congresos de Aguadulce, Almería, Spain, with Cardinal Angelo Amato leading the beatification celebration.

As a blessed of the Catholic Church, Blessed Antonio Sierra Leyva is honored on September 15th, during the feast of his martyrdom. Catholics around the world commemorate his life and sacrifice, recognizing him as a role model and intercessor for those facing persecution and challenges to their faith.

Blessed Antonio Sierra Leyva's exemplary life serves as a reminder of the profound dedication and courage demonstrated by many Catholics during times of hostility towards the Church. His story encourages us to remain faithful and steadfast in the face of adversity, trusting in God's providence and grace.
