Biografía

Blessed Arsenio Merino Miguel, also known as Brother Augusto María, was a devoted Catholic and a member of the Brothers of the Christian Schools. He was born on 12 December 1884 in San Cebrián de Mudá, Palencia, Spain. From a young age, Arsenio felt a deep calling to serve God and dedicated his life to religious pursuits.

In his early years, Blessed Arsenio joined the Brothers of the Christian Schools, a Catholic religious congregation founded by Saint John Baptist de La Salle. The order focused on providing education to the poor and disadvantaged, emphasizing the importance of quality education as a means to uplift marginalized communities.

Blessed Arsenio fully embraced the mission of the Brothers and worked tirelessly to promote education and instill Christian values in the students he taught. As a dedicated member of the congregation, he served as a teacher, mentor, and role model for countless young people.

Tragically, the Spanish Civil War erupted in 1936, a dark period in Spain's history characterized by violence and persecution of religious individuals. Despite the danger, Brother Augusto María fearlessly continued his work, providing solace and guidance to his students in the midst of chaos.

On 29 October 1936, in El Catllar, Tarragona, Spain, Brother Augusto María was martyred for his unwavering faith and commitment to his vocation. He was a testament to the strength and resilience of the Christian spirit even in the face of grave adversity.

Recognizing his heroic virtues, Pope Benedict XVI proclaimed Blessed Arsenio Merino Miguel's martyrdom on 28 June 2012. This official recognition by the Catholic Church affirmed Brother Augusto María's sacrifice and the sanctity of his life. On 13 October 2013, Pope Francis further honored him by beatifying him in a ceremony held in Tarragona, Spain.

Blessed Arsenio Merino Miguel's life serves as an inspiration to all believers, demonstrating the enduring power of faith and the selfless love of God. His unwavering commitment to his community and the education of young people in the face of persecution testifies to his lasting impact as a modern-day martyr. Today, the faithful commemorate his memory and seek his intercession on his feast day, 29 October.
