Biografía

Blessed Augustine Novello, also known as Agostino Novello, Augustine Novellus, Augustine of Tarano, Matthew of Taormina, and Matteo de’ Termini, was born as Matthew of Taormina in Taormina, Sicily. He was a highly educated individual who eventually graduated as a Doctor of law in Bologna, Italy. After completing his studies, he decided to stay in Bologna and became a professor, sharing his knowledge with others.

Despite his success in academia, Augustine Novello embarked on a different path when he joined the military and held various positions in civil government. He eventually became the chancellor to King Manfred of Sicily. However, during Manfred's war with Charles of Anjou, Augustine suffered severe injuries and was left for dead on the battlefield in Benevento, Italy.

Miraculously, Augustine survived his injuries, and in gratitude for his newfound lease on life, he decided to devote himself to a life of faith. Taking the name Augustine Novello, he became a lay brother with the Augustinian friars. Initially content with this role, his superiors discovered his exceptional education and experience, prompting them to order his ordination as a bishop.

Augustine Novello embraced his new role as a bishop and utilized his skills to benefit the Augustinian Order. He played a significant role in drafting new constitutions for the Order and was later appointed as the prior-general. His outstanding contributions and commitment to the Church led him to serve as a papal confessor and papal legate.

After years of dedicated service and leadership, Augustine Novello made the decision to retire from the world. In 1300, he settled near Siena, Italy, where he lived as a hermit. During this period of solitude, Augustine continued to deepen his spiritual practices and devotion to God.

Throughout his life, Blessed Augustine Novello was known for his profound faith and his unwavering devotion to the Holy Face. He is often depicted as a monk holding an icon of the Holy Face or as a bishop holding the same icon. Another representation showcases him as an Augustinian friar immersed in a book, listening attentively to the whisperings of an angel.

Blessed Augustine Novello was also renowned for his ability to perform miracles. His deep connection to God allowed him to be a source of inspiration and hope for those in need. In honor of his connection to the divine, a cake topped with a paper angel is sometimes associated with his representation.

Blessed Augustine Novello passed away in 1309 at San Leonardo, Italy, of natural causes. His exemplary life of service, piety, and holiness has been recognized and celebrated since his beatification in 1759 by Pope Clement XIII. Though he is not officially venerated on a particular feast day, his cultus has been confirmed. His life stands as an inspiring example of devotion and humble service to God and humanity.
