Beato Agustín Ota

Blessed Augustine Ota, also known as Augustinus Ota, was born in 1572 in Ojika, Goto-retto, Nagasaki, Japan. He dedicated his life to serving the Catholic Church and worked as a catechist, assisting Jesuit missionaries in their mission to spread the faith.

During a time in Japan when Christians faced severe persecution, Blessed Augustine Ota fearlessly professed his faith despite the risks involved. He was imprisoned at Ikinoshima for his unwavering dedication to Catholicism. It was during his time in prison that he encountered the Jesuits and was subsequently received into their order, becoming a part of the Society of Jesus.

Despite the torment he endured, Blessed Augustine Ota remained steadfast in his commitment to his faith and his desire to spread the teachings of Jesus Christ. On August 10, 1622, he was tragically beheaded at Ikinoshima, Japan, as a martyr for his Catholic beliefs.

Recognizing the exemplary life and sacrifice of Blessed Augustine Ota, the Catholic Church venerated him on February 26, 1866, through a decree of martyrdom issued by Pope Blessed Pius IX. Additionally, Pope Blessed Pius IX beatified him on May 7, 1867.

Blessed Augustine Ota's unwavering dedication to the Catholic Church, his selfless service as a catechist, and his martyrdom serve as an inspiration to faithful Catholics around the world. His feast day is celebrated on August 10th, commemorating the day of his martyrdom.
