Biografía

Blessed Bartholomew Maria Dal Monte, also known as Bartholomew Dal Monte, was born on 3 November 1726 in Bologna, Italy. He was the fifth child of Orazio Dal Monte and Anna Maria Bassani, and miraculously the first one to survive infancy. It was believed by his mother that his survival was due to the intercession of Saint Francis of Paola.

At the age of six, Bartholomew was confirmed by the future Pope Benedict XIV on 26 April 1733. Throughout his childhood and adolescence, he received a comprehensive education in the humanities at the prestigious Jesuit Santa Lucia College. Despite opposition from his family, Bartholomew felt a strong calling to religious life and missionary work.

During his journey of discernment, Bartholomew encountered Saint Leonard of Port Maurice, who greatly encouraged his vocation. Responding to this calling, Bartholomew was ordained a priest on 20 December 1749. Initially, he served as a diocesan administrator while continuing his theological studies. On 30 December 1751, he earned a doctorate in theology.

Blessed Bartholomew dedicated his life to supporting parish missions. He tirelessly preached numerous spiritual retreats and parish missions, traveling to 62 different dioceses across Italy. His powerful sermons and compassionate approach brought countless individuals back to the faith and converted many others.

In order to further his mission work, Bartholomew founded the Opera Pia delle Missioni. This organization prepared diocesan priests for home missions and worked closely with them. However, his extensive travel during the 18th century eventually took a toll on his health, leading to its decline.

Interestingly, Blessed Bartholomew Maria Dal Monte was known for predicting the date of his own death. Months in advance, he foresaw his passing which occurred on 24 December 1778, in Bologna, Italy. He died of natural causes, leaving behind a remarkable legacy and a testament to his deep spirituality.

After his death, the relics of Blessed Bartholomew Maria Dal Monte were enshrined in the chapel of Our Lady of Peace, located within the Basilica of Saint Petronius in Bologna. In recognition of his exemplary virtues, he was venerated on 23 January 1921 by Pope Benedict XV. Later, on 27 September 1997, Pope John Paul II beatified him at Saint Peter's Basilica in Rome, Italy.

Blessed Bartholomew Maria Dal Monte's life and mission continue to inspire Catholics worldwide. His commitment to spreading the Gospel, his fervent dedication to parish missions, and his profound love for God and humanity serve as a shining example of Christian faith and discipleship.
