Biografía

Blessed Basilio González Herrero, also known as Alejo of Terradillos, was born on 14 June 1874 in Terradillos, León, Spain. Little is known about his early life and upbringing. However, at the age of 32, on 18 April 1906, Basilio joined the Franciscan Capuchin lay brother, embracing a life of religious devotion and service to God.

Upon entering the religious order, Basilio adopted the name Alejo of Terradillos. He dedicated himself to a life of simplicity, humility, and sacrifice. Alejo served as a porter, fulfilling various responsibilities within the Capuchin Friary. As a porter, he welcomed visitors, cared for the needs of the friars, and displayed a compassion that endeared him to all who encountered him.

During the tumultuous period of the Spanish Civil War, Alejo's unwavering commitment to his faith would be tested. On 14 August 1936, while serving in Jove, Asturias, Spain, he was tragically shot, becoming a martyr for his steadfast beliefs.

Blessed Basilio González Herrero's life was characterized by his dedication to God and his selfless service to others. His unwavering faith in the face of persecution and martyrdom is a testament to his spiritual strength and devotion to his religious calling.

On 27 March 2013, Pope Francis recognized Basilio's martyrdom, decreeing his veneration. Later, on 13 October 2013, Pope Francis beatified him, acknowledging his exceptional holiness and sacrifice.

Blessed Basilio González Herrero's feast day is celebrated on 14 August each year. His life serves as an inspiration to all who strive for a deeper connection with God, demonstrating the transformative power of faith and selfless service.
