Beato Bertarius de Vallombrosa

Blessed Bertarius of Vallombrosa, also known as Bertario, was a 12th-century Catholic monk who played a significant role in counteracting the Simoniac heresy and establishing monastic communities in Italy. Born in the 11th century in Muscoline, Brescia, Italy, Bertarius had a deep spiritual hunger which led him to become a devoted student of Saint Giovanni Gualbert.

Under the guidance of Saint Giovanni, Bertarius grew in his understanding of the Catholic faith and developed a fervent desire to combat the Simoniac heresy. This heresy promoted the buying and selling of ecclesiastical positions, an egregious violation of the sacredness of these roles. In 1070, Bertarius was chosen by Saint Giovanni to travel to Lombardy, Italy, where he would engage in intellectual and theological battles against the proponents of the Simoniac heresy.

Equipped with a profound knowledge of Catholic teachings and a steadfast devotion to the Church, Bertarius fearlessly debated and defended the true faith against the proponents of this heresy. Through his efforts, many were persuaded away from this grave error and returned to the authentic teachings of the Church.

Around the year 1107, Bertarius, along with a group of fellow monks from the Vallombrosa community, established a new monastery in the Valle di Astino in Bergamo, Italy. This monastery, dedicated to the pursuit of a contemplative and ascetic life, became a spiritual oasis for many seeking a deeper connection with God. Bertarius was appointed as the first abbot of this monastery, and under his leadership, the community thrived.

Throughout his tenure as abbot, Bertarius fostered a spirit of devotion, discipline, and prayer in the Vallombrosan monks. His dedication to the spiritual well-being of his brethren helped shape the monastery into a place renowned for its holiness and piety. Bertarius not only exemplified the monastic virtues himself but also imparted them to others through his teachings and personal example.

On June 9, 1126, Blessed Bertarius peacefully passed away at the monastery of the Valle di Astino in Bergamo, Italy. He died of natural causes, leaving behind a rich legacy of faith, zeal for Catholic orthodoxy, and the establishment of flourishing monastic communities.
