Beato Brian Lacey

Blessed Brian Lacey, a Yorkshire country gentleman, is remembered for his unwavering dedication to the Catholic faith and his courageous acts of aiding and hiding priests during a time of persecution in England. Born in Brockdish, Norfolk, England, his life took a dramatic turn as he became entangled in the dangerous underground world of Catholicism.

Blessed Brian Lacey's path intertwined with that of Venerable Father Montford Scott, whom he both assisted and accompanied as a loyal cousin and companion. Together, they supported and provided sanctuary to numerous priests who risked their lives to celebrate the sacraments and minister to the needs of persecuted Catholics. It was during these tumultuous times that Brian's steadfast commitment to his faith would be truly tested.

In 1586, Blessed Brian Lacey was first arrested for his involvement in aiding and hiding priests. However, this initial setback did not deter him from continuing to support the Catholic cause. Tragically, in 1591, his own brother Richard betrayed him, leading to his second arrest. The authorities sought to extract information from Brian regarding fellow Catholics who had provided assistance to priests, subjecting him to unimaginable torture within the walls of Bridewell prison.

Despite the excruciating pain inflicted upon him, Blessed Brian Lacey refused to betray his fellow Catholics or renounce his Catholic faith. His resilience and fortitude in the face of immense suffering have become renowned. Ultimately, his resistance led to his arraignment at the Old Bailey, where he was condemned to death on account of his faith, and for actively supporting and encouraging the activities of Catholic priests.

On 10th December 1591, Brian Lacey met his martyrdom, being hanged at Tyburn, London, for his unyielding commitment to the Catholic faith and his unwavering support for priests. His sacrifice stands as a testament to his deep-rooted belief in the importance of religious freedom and the fight against religious persecution.

Following his death, Blessed Brian Lacey's virtuous life was recognized and venerated by the Catholic Church. Pope Pius XI, on 8th December 1929, declared him a martyr, acknowledging the ultimate sacrifice he made for the faith. Just a week later, on 15th December 1929, Pope Pius XI beatified him, offering inspiration to Catholics worldwide who face challenges in the practice of their faith.

The life of Blessed Brian Lacey serves as a reminder of the importance of religious freedom and the courage required to stand firm in one's beliefs, even when faced with great adversity. His selflessness and unwavering commitment continue to inspire faithful Catholics to this day.
