Biografía

Blessed Brigida of Jesus, also known as Birgitta Morello, Brigida Morello, and Brigida Morello Zancano, was born on 17 June 1610 in San Michele di Pagana di Rapallo, Genoa, Italy. She was the sixth of eleven children born into a deeply religious family.

At the age of 23, Brigida married Matthew Zancano of Cremona, Italy, on 14 October 1633. However, just four years into their marriage, her husband passed away on 11 November 1637, leaving Brigida widowed at a young age. This experience deepened her faith and desire for a religious life.

Seeking guidance and further spiritual growth, Brigida became a student of the Jesuits in Piacenza, Italy. Under their mentorship, she delved into the teachings of the Catholic Church and developed a strong devotion to Jesus and the Blessed Virgin Mary.

Inspired by her devotion, Brigida founded the Institute of the Ursuline Sisters of Mary Immaculate. This religious congregation aimed to serve the needs of the community, particularly in education and caring for the sick. The institute was dedicated to spreading the love and compassion of Christ, and Brigida played a crucial role in its establishment.

Throughout her life, Brigida exhibited extraordinary holiness and virtue, becoming known for her selflessness, humility, and devotion to prayer. Her deep love for God and dedication to serving others inspired those around her and drew many to the path of righteousness.

Blessed Brigida of Jesus passed away on 3 September 1679 in Piacenza, Italy, at the age of 69, due to natural causes. Her life and spiritual journey were recognized by the Catholic Church, and she was venerated on 29 April 1980 by Pope John Paul II in Rome, Italy, who declared her heroic in virtue.

On 15 March 1998, Pope John Paul II beatified Brigida of Jesus, officially recognizing her as Blessed Brigida of Jesus. Today, her feast day is commemorated on 3 September, when Catholics around the world celebrate her life and seek her intercession.

Blessed Brigida of Jesus remains an inspiration for all, particularly for those seeking to deepen their relationship with God and embrace a life of selfless service. Her legacy lives on through the Ursuline Sisters of Mary Immaculate, who continue to follow in her footsteps, carrying out her mission of love and devotion to Christ.
