Biografía

Blessed Carmelo Juan Pérez Rodríguez, also known as Carmelo Pérez Rodríguez, was born on 11 February 1908 in Vimianzo, La Coruña, Spain. At the tender age of two days, he was baptized into the Catholic faith and held a deep devotion to his faith throughout his life.

As a young man, Carmelo became a member of the Salesians of Don Bosco, a religious order founded by Saint John Bosco that focuses on the education and spiritual formation of young people. He made his profession at Carabanchel Alto in Madrid, Spain, on 10 July 1927. Carmelo furthered his studies for the priesthood in Madrid and Turin, Italy, showing great dedication and enthusiasm in his pursuits.

However, his religious journey was interrupted by the outbreak of the Spanish Civil War. At the time, Carmelo was serving as a sub-deacon. When he returned to Madrid during a break from his studies, he was mistakenly identified as a religious brother due to his attire. This led to his arrest and subsequent imprisonment by anti-Catholic forces.

Despite the difficult circumstances, Carmelo remained steadfast in his faith and displayed incredible strength and courage. On 1 October 1936, he was tragically martyred, being shot in Madrid. His death bore witness to his unwavering commitment to Christ and the Church, as he gave his life as a testament to his beliefs.

The life of Blessed Carmelo Juan Pérez Rodríguez serves as an inspiration to all who strive to live out their faith with unwavering conviction, even in the face of persecution. His beatification took place on 28 October 2007 by Pope Benedict XVI, who recognized him as a martyr of the Church. Pope Benedict XVI had already venerated him on 26 June 2006 by decreeing his martyrdom.

Through his intercession, the faithful seek his help and guidance, particularly those facing persecution or struggling to maintain their faith amid challenging circumstances. The feast day of Blessed Carmelo Juan Pérez Rodríguez is celebrated on 1 October each year. His life stands as a powerful example of faithfulness, courage, and devotion to God, leaving a lasting impact on the Catholic community.
