Blessed Ceferino Namuncurá

Early life
Ceferino Namuncurá was born in Chimpay, Argentina, on 26 August 1886, and was baptized two years later by the Salesian missionary Don Milanesio.[1] This missionary had mediated a peace agreement between the Mapuche and the Argentine army, allowing Ceferino Namuncurá's father to keep the title of "Great Cacique" and the territory of Chimpay for his people.[1] When he was eleven years old, his father enrolled him in a government school in Buenos Aires to make him the future defender of his people.[1] However, Ceferino Namuncurá felt uncomfortable there, so his father transferred him to the Salesian college "Pius IX".[1] At this college, the adventure of grace began to transform his heart into a heroic witness of Christian life.[1]
Vocation
He was launched toward spiritual heights by reading the life of Domenico Savio, of whom he became an ardent imitator, and by his first communion, where he made a covenant of absolute fidelity with Jesus.[1] While he was a Salesian aspirant in Viedma, Francesco De Salvo saw him riding a horse like lightning and asked him what he liked most, expecting an answer about horsemanship, an art in which the Araucanians were masters.[1] Ceferino Namuncurá reined in his horse, replied, "To be a priest," and continued his ride.[1]
Illness and death
During these years of inner growth, he fell ill with tuberculosis and was sent back to his native climate, but this was not enough.[1] Monsignor Cagliero then thought he would find better care in Italy, where Pope Pius X received him in a private audience.[1] On 28 March 1905, he was admitted to the Fatebenefratelli hospital on the Isola Tiberina, where he died on 11 May of the same year.[1] Ceferino Namuncurá was beatified on 11 November 2007 by Pope Benedict XVI.[1]

At eleven his father enrolled him in a government school at Buenos Aires, hoping to make him his people's future defender; ill at ease there, he was moved to the Salesian college of Pius IX. There he read the life of Dominic Savio and became his ardent imitator, and at his First Communion bound himself in fidelity to Christ. Already a Salesian aspirant at Viedma, he was asked one day what he liked best and answered, reining in his horse, that it was to be a priest. In those years he contracted tuberculosis. Sent home to his native climate without improvement, he was brought to Italy for treatment; Pope Pius X received him in private audience. He died in Rome on 11 May 1905.
