Beato Cristóbal Robinson

Blessed Christopher Robinson, also known as Christopher Robertshaw, was born around 1568 in Woodside, England. He entered the Catholic seminary and studied at Douai and Rheims in France, commencing his studies in 1590. After completing his theological education, he was ordained as a Catholic priest on 24 February 1592.

In September of the same year, Robinson returned to his homeland, England, with a clandestine mission to minister to the oppressed Catholic community residing in the areas of Cumberland and Westmoreland. During this time, the nation was witnessing a period of intense religious conflict and persecution, particularly against Catholics who remained loyal to their faith.

A notable incident during Robinson's ministry was his presence at the violent execution of Saint John Boste, a fellow Catholic priest and martyr. Impacted by the events and compelled to bear witness, Robinson published an account of Boste's martyrdom, thereby ensuring that his sacrifice would not be forgotten.

However, the risks associated with this kind of ministry were high, and Robinson faced constant danger due to the precariousness of his situation as a covert priest. On 4 March 1597, his efforts to serve the Catholic community were abruptly halted when he was arrested on the charge of exercising priesthood, an offense under the anti-Catholic laws of the period.

Despite his imprisonment and impending trial, Robinson remained steadfast in his faith and commitment to his fellow Catholics. Unfortunately, his unwavering dedication ultimately led to his martyrdom. On 19 August 1598, in Carlisle, England, Robinson was hanged for the crime of being a Catholic priest.

Remarkably, the hanging rope broke twice during his execution. Undeterred, his persecutors resorted to using two ropes on the third attempt, which proved successful in ending his earthly life. Robinson's courage and fortitude in the face of persecution have made him one of the Martyrs of England, Scotland, and Wales.

Blessed Christopher Robinson's feast days are celebrated on 31 March and 22 November as one of the Martyrs of England, Scotland, and Wales, and on 29 October as one of the Martyrs of Douai. In recognition of his martyrdom and his unwavering commitment to the Catholic faith, Pope John Paul II proclaimed Christopher Robinson venerable on 10 November 1986, and he was subsequently beatified on 22 November 1987 by the same pontiff.

Christopher Robinson's life and death serve as a testament to the resilience and fidelity of Catholic priests during a time of great adversity in England.
