Beato Corrado de Spoleto

Blessed Corrado of Spoleto, also known as Corrado of Sarnano, was a Franciscan friar who lived during the 13th and 14th centuries. Born in Spoleto, Italy, the details of his early life are not readily available. However, it is known that he dedicated himself to a life of religious devotion as a Franciscan at the convent of Sarnano, located in Macerata, Italy.

Corrado's spiritual journey led him to seek a more intensely religious life within the context of Franciscan spirituality. In 1290, he received special permission from Pope Celestine V to live a life of rigorous solitude and withdrawal from all community life and obedience to his superior. This decision meant that Corrado intended to strictly follow the example set by Saint Francis of Assisi, the founder of the Franciscan Order.

At the convent of San Liberato near Sarnano, Blessed Corrado spent the remainder of his life in seclusion and deep contemplation. Despite his withdrawal from communal life, Corrado's intense spirituality remained an inspiration to his fellow friars and others who knew of his piety.

Blessed Corrado of Spoleto passed away on 22nd October 1310 at the convent of San Liberato near Sarnano. His death was attributed to natural causes, marking the end of a devout and solitary life dedicated to God. Today, his feast day is celebrated on 22nd October in the Franciscan martyrology, and on 19th May on some calendars.

Although the official process of veneration by the Catholic Church has not been documented, Corrado's life and example have left a lasting impact within the Franciscan Order. His unwavering commitment to a life of deep spirituality and withdrawal from the world has made him an inspiration to those seeking a deeper union with God. While there may not yet be official recognition as a saint or beatification for Corrado of Spoleto, his memory and the legacy of his contemplative life continue to be honored and revered.
