Beato Cristoforo de Milán

Blessed Cristoforo of Milan, also known as Cattanei or Christopher, was a devout Franciscan friar who dedicated his life to serving God and living a life of piety and severe penances. He was born in Milan, Italy, in the 15th century and eventually found his calling within the Franciscan order.

After joining the Franciscan convent, Cristoforo resided at the convent in Ciudad Rodrigo, Salamanca, Spain, for a remarkable 40 years. His deep spirituality and commitment to his faith earned him a reputation among his fellow brothers and the local people. He was known for his unwavering devotion and dedication to a life of self-sacrifice.

Cristoforo's severe penances became well-known, and he inspired others through his example. He would often impose additional forms of physical mortification upon himself to deepen his spiritual journey. It was discovered after his death that he wore sheets of iron under his cassock as an extra form of penance.

Blessed Cristoforo's exceptional piety and humble way of life made him a source of inspiration for his community. On Good Friday, April 15, 1530, he passed away peacefully at the Franciscan convent in Ciudad Rodrigo, Salamanca, Spain. His funeral was attended by a large crowd of local people, who were eager to obtain relics associated with his holy life. They tore Christopher's cassock into pieces, realizing the sheets of iron he wore as additional penance.

While there is no specific representation attributed to Blessed Cristoforo, his profound faith and devotion continue to be celebrated by the Franciscan order. His feast day is observed by the Franciscans on April 15th each year. Though he is not officially venerated or beatified at this time, his legacy as an exemplary Franciscan friar and a model of piety lives on.
