Biografía

Blessed Diego Balmaseda López was born on 27th August 1876 in Castuera, Badajoz, Spain. He grew up in a devout Catholic family and was known for his piety and love for the Church from a young age. Diego felt a strong calling to the priesthood, and he pursued his vocation with great dedication.

After completing his initial studies, Diego was ordained a priest for the Diocese of Córdoba, Spain. He served in various parishes throughout his ministry, ultimately being assigned to the Cabeza de Buey community. In this role, he worked tirelessly to shepherd and guide his flock, providing spiritual care and support to the faithful entrusted to his pastoral care.

During the tumultuous period of the Spanish Civil War in the 1930s, religious persecution was rampant, and priests were particularly targeted. Sadly, Father Diego Balmaseda López became a victim of this persecution on 17th August 1936. He was martyred for his unwavering faith and refusal to renounce his religious beliefs.

Father Diego's courageous witness to the Gospel and steadfast dedication to the Catholic Church led to his recognition as a martyr of the faith. On 23rd November 2020, Pope Francis declared him venerable, acknowledging his martyrdom and the ultimate sacrifice he made for his faith.

Finally, on 16th October 2021, Pope Francis beatified Blessed Diego Balmaseda López, formally recognizing him as a blessed of the Catholic Church. The beatification ceremony took place at the Cathedral of Nuestra Señora de la Asunción in Córdoba, Spain, and was presided over by Cardinal Marcello Semeraro.

Blessed Diego Balmaseda López's life and martyrdom remind us of the profound commitment and sacrifice exhibited by many during a time of intense religious persecution. His beatification serves as an inspiration to all Catholics to steadfastly hold onto their faith and boldly proclaim the Gospel, even in the face of adversity. May we seek his intercession and be inspired by his example of steadfastness and devotion to our Catholic faith.
