Biografía

Blessed Elias del Socorro Nieves, also known as Mateo Elias Nieves, was born on September 21, 1882, in San Pedro, Yuriria, Guanajuato, Mexico. He was born into a deeply religious peasant family but was a sickly baby, leading his family to quickly baptize him as they feared he might not survive. Despite the early health challenges, Elias managed to grow up, yet his struggles were far from over.

At the age of 12, Elias nearly succumbed to tuberculosis, which further added to the hardships faced by his family. Sadly, his father passed away soon after, leaving Elias as the sole provider for his family. Determined to support his loved ones, he took on various jobs to make ends meet.

In 1904, at the age of 22, Elias was admitted to the Augustinian college of Yuriria, where he began his journey into priesthood. Although he was considerably older than the standard admission age, this did not deter him from pursuing his vocation. Showing strong dedication, Elias took his vows in 1911, assuming the name Elias del Socorro.

He was ordained on April 9, 1916, in an inspiring ceremony dedicated to the service of God and others. Shortly after his ordination, Elias became the parochial vicar of the village of La Canada de Caracheo in 1921. It was during this time in his life that the government persecution of the Church began in Mexico.

Refusing to be relocated to a city where he could be controlled, Elias deliberately chose to continue serving his parish despite the risks involved. He moved to the nearby hills, where he clandestinely continued his priestly duties under the cover of darkness. His unwavering faith and commitment to his parishioners earned him immense admiration and respect.

However, during this tumultuous time, Elias's dedication to his faith and service led to his arrest. Alongside some pious laymen, he was apprehended by the authorities. On March 10, 1928, Elias was martyred on the side of the road, becoming a victim of his steadfast devotion to God and the Church.

Blessed Elias del Socorro Nieves met a tragic end, but his sacrifice and martyrdom testified to his unwavering faith in the face of danger. Today, he is venerated as a martyr and recognized for his exemplary life. Pope John Paul II acknowledged his martyrdom on December 17, 1996, through a decree, and on October 12, 1997, Elias was beatified by the same pope.

As a symbol of faith and sacrifice, Blessed Elias del Socorro Nieves continues to inspire countless individuals to embrace their own spirituality even in the most challenging environments. His feast days are celebrated on March 10 and October 11 by the Augustinian community.
