Biografía

Blessed Emilio Serrano Lizarralde, also known as Saturnino of Bilbao, was a Franciscan Capuchin monk who was martyred during the Spanish Civil War. He is venerated in the Catholic Church as a blessed and his feast day is celebrated on 26th August.

Emilio Serrano Lizarralde was born on 25th May 1910, in Bilbao, Vizcaya, Spain. From an early age, he demonstrated a deep devotion to God and a strong desire to serve others. This led him to enter the religious life and join the Capuchin Franciscan order.

After completing his initial formation, Emilio embraced a life of prayer, simplicity, and poverty. He sought to follow in the footsteps of Saint Francis of Assisi by living a life of radical discipleship and selflessness. With a burning love for God and a strong commitment to the Church, he dedicated himself to the service of God's people.

During the turbulent years of the Spanish Civil War, religious persecution was rampant. Emilio, along with many other religious and clergy, faced immense dangers and threats to their faith. Despite the risks involved, he courageously continued to proclaim the gospel and minister to the spiritual needs of his fellow believers.

Emilio's commitment to his faith and his unwavering resolve to support the Catholic cause ultimately led to his martyrdom. On 26th August 1936, he was captured by opposing forces in Madrid and was put to death for his allegiance to Christ. Emilio's sacrifice and martyrdom have become a powerful testimony to the enduring strength of faith in the face of persecution.

In recognition of his heroic virtues and his willingness to give his life for the sake of his faith, Pope Francis declared Emilio Serrano Lizarralde a martyr on 27th March 2013. This decree of martyrdom acknowledges his commitment to Christ and his enduring legacy as a witness to the Gospel.

Subsequently, on 13th October 2013, Pope Francis beatified Emilio Serrano Lizarralde in a solemn ceremony, elevating him to the status of blessed within the Catholic Church. His beatification serves as a source of inspiration and encouragement for believers, reminding them of the transformative power of faith in the midst of adversity.

Blessed Emilio Serrano Lizarralde continues to be venerated by the faithful as a shining example of Christian virtue and devotion. His life and martyrdom serve as a reminder of the sacrifices made by countless individuals during the Spanish Civil War, a time of great turmoil and religious persecution in Spain. Through his intercession, may he inspire us to remain steadfast in our faith and devoted to the service of God and our fellow human beings.
