Biografía

Blessed Enric Canadell Quintana, also known as Father Enric of the Sacred Hearts, was born on 20 June 1890 in Olot, within the Diocese of Girona, Spain. He was the son of Francisco Canadell Presta and Margarita Quintana. Enric was baptized at the age of just one day, marking the beginning of his lifelong journey of faith.

Enric felt a calling to religious life and joined the Piarists, a religious institute founded by St. Joseph Calasanctius, on 22 October 1905 in MoyÖ, Spain. After several years of formation and discernment, he made his solemn vows on 29 June 1912, committing himself fully to the service of God and his fellow beings.

Continuing on his path of dedication, Enric was ordained a priest on 20 September 1913 in Lérida, Spain. With his ordination, he embarked on a vocation that would lead him to become a significant figure in education as well. He served as a teacher in various Piarist schools located in the Spanish cities of Mataro, Barcelona, and Balaguer. Additionally, he held the position of vice-rector of the school in Barcelona, further contributing to the intellectual and spiritual development of the students under his care.

Tragically, during the turbulent times of the Spanish Civil War, Father Enric Canadell Quintana met a martyr's death. He was shot on 17 August 1936 in Castellfullit, Girona, Spain, as a result of his unwavering commitment to his faith and his tireless efforts to inspire and guide the younger generation.

After his death, the relics of Blessed Enric Canadell Quintana were enshrined in the church of San Esteban in Olot, within the Diocese of Girona, Spain. Recognizing his martyrdom and his exemplary life, Pope John Paul II venerated him on 15 December 1994 by decreeing his martyrdom. Subsequently, on 1 October 1995, Pope John Paul II beatified him, honoring his life of sacrifice and devotion.

Blessed Enric Canadell Quintana remains an inspiration for Catholics and educators alike, exemplifying the virtues of courage, commitment, and selflessness. His life and witness serve as a reminder of the enduring power of faith even in the face of adversity and persecution.
