Biografía

Blessed Enrique García Beltrán, also known as Brother Enrique of Almazora, was born on 16 March 1913 in Almazora, in the Diocese of Tortosa, Valencia, Spain. He was the son of Vicente García and Donna Concepción Beltrán and was baptized on the day of his birth.

From an early age, Enrique showed a deep devotion to his faith. He was known as a pious child, spending all his free time in church, where he nurtured a profound love for sacred music. Recognizing his calling, he entered the Seraphic Seminary of Massamagrell, Spain, when he was only 14 years old.

Enrique's spiritual journey led him to join the Franciscan Capuchins on 13 August 1928. He dedicated himself to a life of service and made his profession as a religious brother on 17 September 1935. As a deacon, he demonstrated a great reverence for his vocation, devoting himself to the study of sacred music, singing in the choir, and faithfully observing the canonical hours.

Tragically, the outbreak of the Spanish Civil War brought immense suffering and persecution to the Catholic Church in Spain. Enrique, along with countless other faithful, endured immense hardships and persecution due to their religious beliefs. Imprisoned for his unwavering faith, Brother Enrique remained steadfast in his commitment to God and his religious community.

On 16 August 1936, Brother Enrique García Beltrán was martyred at La Pedrera on the road just outside Castellón, Spain. He courageously bore witness to his faith, even in the face of severe persecution. His martyrdom serves as a testament to his unwavering dedication to Christ and his Church.

Following his death, Blessed Enrique was buried in his hometown of Almazora, in the Diocese of Tortosa, Valencia, Spain. Recognizing his holiness and sacrifice, Pope John Paul II declared him venerable on 20 December 1999, with a decree of martyrdom. On 11 March 2001, Pope John Paul II beatified him, acknowledging his sanctity and role as a model of faithfulness and courage for all believers.

Blessed Enrique García Beltrán stands as an inspiration to all those who are called to embrace their faith with unwavering devotion. His life and martyrdom remind us of the profound sacrifice that many faithful Catholics endured during a time of persecution, and his memory continues to be celebrated on 16 August each year.
