Beata Euphemia de Altenmünster

Blessed Euphemia of Altenmünster, also known as Eufemia, was born in the 12th century in Bavaria, Germany, as the daughter of Count Berthold and Sophie of Andechs. She was blessed with a pious upbringing and was the sister of Saint Mechtildis of Edelstetten.

From an early age, Euphemia felt drawn to the religious life and decided to pursue her calling as a Benedictine nun. She entered the Altomünster Abbey, located in Dachau, Upper Bavaria, which was a thriving spiritual center at the time. Euphemia's devotion and dedication to the Benedictine Rule quickly impressed her superiors, and she was eventually appointed as the abbess of the monastery.

As the abbess, Euphemia took on the responsibility of leading the community and ensuring the spiritual growth of not only her fellow religious sisters but also the population surrounding the abbey. She expanded the property and influence of the Altomünster Abbey, attracting more people to the religious life and fostering a stronger connection between the community and the monastery.

Euphemia is remembered for her personal piety and deep commitment to the teachings of the Catholic Church. Her example of virtuous living and devotion to God inspired those around her to seek a closer relationship with the Divine. Euphemia's leadership was marked by wisdom, compassion, and a genuine care for the spiritual well-being of her community.

Although not much is known about the specific miracles or remarkable events attributed to Euphemia, her life serves as a model of humble service and faithfulness. She lived out her vocation as abbess until her death on 18 June, around the year 1180, within the walls of the Altomünster Abbey. Euphemia was laid to rest in her family's crypt located in Diessen am Ammersee, Bavaria, Germany.

Blessed Euphemia of Altenmünster has been recognized for her holiness and dedication to the religious life but has yet to be formally canonized by the Catholic Church. Regardless, she is venerated and honored locally for her saintly virtues and continues to inspire those who come to know her story.
