Beato Felipe Hernández Martínez

Blessed Felipe Hernández Martínez, also known as Bl. Felipe Hernández Martínez, was born on 14 March 1913 in Villena, Alicante, Spain. He received his education at a Salesian boarding school, where he developed a deep religious and spiritual foundation. Impressed by the Salesian mission and teachings, Felipe decided to join the Salesians and was accepted into their religious community.

After initially being trained in Campello, Spain, Felipe made his profession as a Salesian on 1 August 1930 in Girona, Spain. He was known for his dedication and commitment to his vocation, and he desired to further his studies to become a priest. In pursuit of his calling, Felipe began his studies for the priesthood in Madrid, Spain, in 1936.

Unfortunately, the outbreak of the Spanish Civil War posed significant challenges to Felipe and his fellow religious. Amidst the tense and violent atmosphere, Felipe became a victim of religious persecution. On the night of 27 July 1936, he was tragically shot in Barcelona, Spain, losing his life as a result of his faith.

Blessed Felipe Hernández Martínez is recognized as one of the Martyred Salesians of Valencia, Catalunya, and Aragón. His feast days are commemorated on 27 July, the day of his martyrdom, and on 22 September, along with other Martyred Salesians. Pope John Paul II formally venerated Bl. Felipe Hernández Martínez on 20 December 1999 with a decree of martyrdom. This recognition led to his beatification on 11 March 2001, also by Pope John Paul II.

As a devout Salesian, Blessed Felipe Hernández Martínez exemplified the values of his religious community, which include educating young people and nurturing their spiritual growth. His dedication to his vocation and unwavering faith in the face of adversity serve as an inspiration for believers. His martyrdom is a testament to the sacrifices made by many during the Spanish Civil War for their religious convictions.
