Biografía

Blessed Fermín Gellida Cornelles, also known as Brother Alejandro Juan, was a Salesian brother, teacher, and martyr in the Spanish Civil War. He was born on October 6, 1889, in Benicarló, Castellón, Spain.

As a member of the Salesian Society of Don Bosco, Brother Fermín dedicated his life to the service of God and the education of young people. He was known for his dedication, compassion, and enthusiasm in teaching. Through his work as a teacher, he not only imparted knowledge but also nurtured the spiritual growth of his students.

During the turbulent years of the Spanish Civil War, when anticlericalism was on the rise, Brother Fermín found himself facing persecution due to his religious vocation. Despite the danger, he remained steadfast in his faith and committed to his mission. He continued to educate and provide spiritual guidance to the children in his care, refusing to abandon them in their time of need.

On August 18, 1936, in Vinarús, Castellón, Brother Fermín Gellida Cornelles was martyred for his faith. He faced persecution and ultimately sacrificed his life because of his unwavering commitment to Christ and his calling as a Salesian educator. His martyrdom serves as a testament to his courage and devotion to God.

Brother Fermín was recognized for his martyrdom and his commitment to his vocation by Pope Benedict XVI, who issued a decree on June 28, 2012, declaring him venerable. Later, on October 13, 2013, Pope Francis beatified him in Tarragona, Spain, celebrating his beatification and acknowledging his sanctity.

Blessed Fermín Gellida Cornelles is honored and celebrated on his feast day, which is observed on August 18th each year. His life and martyrdom continue to inspire and serve as a reminder of the sacrifices made by individuals dedicated to their faith, education, and the well-being of others.
